Are your buttons holding on for dear life?

Ladies, I’ve seen you do this. Often. That’s right, I’ve seen you go out and about in the world wearing a button down dress shirt that is too tight for you.  It’s so tight that it looks like the buttons are holding on for dear life. I have to be honest with you.  This doesn’t look good.  Not one little bit.  It’s doing nothing to highlight your style.  More importantly, this look actually takes away from your credibility! Why would you want to do this to yourself? Regardless of how you’re wearing a classic button down shirt (to work, out for dinner, on the weekend, to a show or anything else), here are some tips to make sure the shirt fits your shape. If your dress shirt is too tight, get rid of it (donate it please) and start from scratch. First, wiht the buttons fully done up, make sure the dress shirt fits you at the widest part of your body.  You want it to comfortable across your widest part without any pulling. Ladies, this will likely be across your chest or your hips. See if the shirt’s shoulder seem is aligned to your shoulder.  If the shirt is too big, the shoulder will hang down.  If the shirt is too small, it will be tight across your shoulders. At this point, you should be able to see where the shirt is too big and where it is too small.  Now, it’s time to tailor that shirt!  Men do this right?  When they buy a new dress shirt, they often have it tailored.  I have to say, I rarely see women do this. An experienced tailor will be able to see what needs to be taken in.  For example, if you are your widest across the chest (make sure those button do up without any pulling!!!), it’s likely that you’ll need some darting in the body/torso of the shirt so that the shirt skims your frame – without being too fitted.  You may also need to take in the shoulders so that the seem fits at your actual shoulder.  These alterations will avoid the “I’m wearing a tent” look. Once all alterations are done, try it on.  You’ll want to make sure that it’s fitted to your frame and that you can move pretty easily.  If additional alterations are needed, go back to your tailor and have the shirt fixed! Lastly, make sure you iron that dress shirt before wearing it. ;)   If you have any questions about fit or need some tailoring suggestions, drop me a line.

Fun Fall Looks for Work: Part 3

Here’s the last fall outfit from the Breakfast Television segment we did a short while back. For this outfit, we pulled together a casual look that could be worn to a professional office (on a casual Friday type of day), while working from home, or in a less formal work environment.  I have to say, I really love the way this outfit came together on our model. Model #3: Megan Breakin’ it down: We’re showcasing a rich paisley-esque print in this blouse.  It is sheer – not good for most work environments – so I’ve paired it with a dark neutral tank.  For those that work in a more conservative office, I’d suggest you opt for a thicker strap for the cami/tank.  It’s got a bit of a retro feel to it as well with the high collar that ties in the front.  I like that you’re able to be creative and change up the tie so that it better fits with your style. Because Megan has a lot of length and has a lean frame, she’s able to pull off the rise of jean I’ve put her in.  If you happen to have a little “extra” around the midsection, I’d suggest a slightly higher rise.  I’ve also chosen a wider leg jean that resembles a trouser jean.  This shape tends to make the leg look longer and leaner. Since the blouse has a lot of colour and pattern in it, I’ve chosen to go with a very dark wash jean (great for fall and winter) with dark stitiching.  I do like to chose this type of jean because of it’s versatility in both dressier and casual situations. I’ve paired this with an ankle lace-up bootie.  It’s a great pairing to give a more casual look to this outfit.  If you’d like to take it up a notch, opt for a pump or more of a streamlined boot. Megan’s accessories are not overwhelming to this outfit but help bring it together.  You can see that her earring and bold statement ring complement each other but certainly don’t match.  They are a great complement to the metallic belt that has been added to finish off this outfit. Since this segment was all about up-dos.. buns, specifically… you’ll see that she is sporting a rather sleek, assymetrical bun. Love! I also like that her makeup is work-appropriate but also plays up her beautiful features. Hope you enjoyed this segment.  If you have a question, feel free to ask! For this segment, L2 Style was very happy to work with Floc Boutique, to pull together all three looks, as well as House of Tin and Makeup Artistry by Dana, for the fashion forward hair/makeup.

Fun Fall Looks for Work: Part 2

So, let’s talk about the second outfit from our style segment on Breakfast Television! I have to say that I just LOVE this outfit that Kristin is wearing.  She looks stunning and totally on-point in this look! Model #2: Kristin Breakin’ it down: Kristin is wearing a really chic deep grey peplum blouse with black piping along the neckline and cuffs.  There is fine stitched detailing along the shoulders of this blouse… a detail you’d see close up.  This blouse has a very retro yet classic look which perfectly highlights Kristin’s tiny waist.  To draw the eye right to her waist, we’ve accentuated it with a double metal rope belt. We’ve paired this blouse with a deep, rich orange asymmetical fitted skirt with a very Mad Men feel to it.  While the rest of the outfit is quite interesting on its own, I’ve kept the colour palette muted so as to feature this totally chic skirt. I’ve paired this outfit with a black suede pump that is classic and uber sexy!  Since her skirt is a little longer than I’d normally recommend for someone of her height, it is an absolute must to wear heels with this outfit. Kristin’s hair and makeup pulls this retro-inspired look together. Stay tuned for a breakdown of outfit #3. For this segment, L2 Style was very happy to work with Floc Boutique, to pull together all three looks, and House of Tin and Makeup Artistry by Dana, for the fashion forward hair/makeup. See ya later!
